The term "car tune-up" is often seen in various auto repair shops. So, it's no wonder if you're already familiar with it.

However, most car owners still don't know what the term actually means. What's the difference compared to regular maintenance?

Let's delve deeper to recognize the distinctions.

What is a Car Tune-up?

A car tune-up is the readjustment of all vehicle components aimed at restoring its performance to its original state.

Tune-ups are a mandatory activity for vehicle owners. This is because the tune-up process involves inspecting the engine condition to ensure it is maintained and remains in prime condition without experiencing issues.

The tune-up process can also include replacing worn or damaged parts, usually done periodically.

Besides restoring the condition, tune-up activities can also enhance the car's performance compared to before.

How Much Does a Car Tune-up Cost?

The cost of a car tune-up varies depending on the workshop you choose.

Generally, authorized workshops charge higher fees for tune-ups compared to general workshops. The average cost ranges from IDR 1-3 million or more.

Meanwhile, general workshops usually charge around IDR 350,000 to IDR 500,000. However, these rates do not include component replacement costs.

Wondering why the costs differ? This is because authorized workshops have special standard operating procedures and certified mechanics. Additionally, component replacements in authorized workshops only use original-brand components.

What's the Difference Between Car Service and Car Tune-Up?

As mentioned earlier, tune-up and service are two different activities.

To understand better, here are the points of difference:

1. Time Difference

The time interval for tune-ups is longer, typically every 30,000-50,000 km or 12-24 months, with the first 120,000 km serving as a tune-up benchmark.

In contrast, car service intervals are shorter, typically every 10,000-15,000 km. Service intervals are specified in the manual, such as at 1,000 km, 5,000 km, 10,000 km, and so on.

2. Maintenance Types

The next difference between service and tune-up lies in the types of inspections.

During maintenance, mechanics will check components according to the car's mileage. This is in line with the purpose of periodic service inspections. Consequently, some components may not be checked during maintenance.

On the other hand, the tune-up process involves a comprehensive inspection of vehicle components. Some components even require more detailed inspection, such as spark plugs, valves, ignition systems, and fuel systems.

3. Cost Difference

Considering its more thorough process, tune-up requires more time and incurs higher costs compared to regular maintenance.

The estimated cost for general service is around IDR 200,000 to IDR 400,000. Meanwhile, tune-up costs can reach millions of rupiah, depending on the type and condition of the car.

Effects of a Car Tune-Up

After undergoing a tune-up process, your vehicle will experience several effects, such as:

1. Optimal Performance

One of the main purposes of a tune-up is to maintain the vehicle's performance so it stays optimal. In other words, a tune-up can prevent problems like overheating or sudden breakdowns.

2. Ensuring Component Stability

Inspections during the tune-up process also serve to ensure that all components are well-maintained. This minimizes the risk of accidents due to component damage.

3. Improved Driving Comfort

With a well-maintained car and optimal performance, you can drive more comfortably. This is especially due to stability, effective braking, and responsive handling.

4. Extending Vehicle Lifespan

A tune-up can also restore performance to its original state, helping to extend the vehicle's lifespan.

That's an explanation of car tuning and its differences from service. After going through this, you should be able to distinguish between the two, correct?
