Tires are one important component in a vehicle that has many functions. Not only as the main support and wheels for the car to roll on the road, tires are also required as grippers on the road surface that enable the car to run at a certain speed.

The continuous use of tires thin out the tire surface, thus it would reach a certain dangerous point. This is what triggers vehicle owners to replace or buy new tires. However, you need to be careful when buying new tires because it concerns comfort and safety.

There are several components that must be considered when buying new tires for your favorite car. Here are tips on buying new tires, either the same brand as the car or from a different brand.

1. Choose according to its type

The first tip for buying new tires is to find the ones that suit your car needs. There are several types of car tires created to match types of road terrains. Here are the types of car tires.

  • Tubeless tires. This type of tire has anti-leak liquid when the wheel is first installed. The advantage is that the tires are more air-resistant and don't go flat even though they have no inner tube.

  • Bias tires. This type of tire is made of sheets of cord woven in a zig-zag pattern and forms an angle of 40 to 65 degrees.

  • Radial tires. This type of radial tire is made of layers of fiber set in cross direction on the circumference of the tire. Radial tires are usually used for trucks or light loaded vehicles.

  • RFT (Run Flat Tire) tires. This type of tire is claimed to be safe to use at certain speeds even without air or when it is flat. One of the advantages of RFT type tires is that it contributes to a lighter car overall since you no longer need a spare tire, thus you can have a more optimum fuel efficiency.

  • All Terrains. This type of tire is specifically designed for fields with gravel, soil, and flooding, so it is very suitable for off road cars.

2. Choose according to the type of car

After knowing the terrain that the tires will be used on, it's time to adjust them to the type of car. Each car has its own type of tire according to the factory default setting.

To find out the type of tire that matches the type of car, the manufacturer usually lists the variety or type of tire. You can find the information in the drawer placard, door, or near the fuel tank lid so that it can be used as a reference when buying new tires.

Each type of tire usually consists of a code combination. For example P215/55R17 93V. The meaning of the letter P is Passenger or the car is produced to transport people or passengers. Then there is also an R code for radial type tires, LT or Light Truck code for carrying goods, ST or Special Trailer, to T code for Temporary or spare tires so that these car tires cannot be used continuously.

3. Pay attention to the tire size

The next tip for buying new car tires is to pay attention to the tire size. As the aforementioned information, you can look at the code on the engraving next to the tire to find the details of the tire size.

For example, the code P 215/55R17 93V shows 215 as the indicator of the tire tread width in millimeters in which it refers to the good performance and speed. While, the number 55 shows the aspect ratio of the thickness of the tire as a percentage of the width of the tread, which means the thickness of the tire is 55% of 215 millimeters. If the thickness is greater, then the balance of the car will be better maintained.

The number 17 indicates the diameter of the wheel in inches. Finally, the 93V code is the maximum load capacity and safe speed limit. The number 93 has an index of carrying capacity or load index on each tire, while the letter V means a maximum speed of 240 km/hour.

4. Buy according to the design of the tire motif or groove

Another way to choose the best car tires is to adjust the design of the tire motif or groove according to your needs. This is because the design patterns of motifs or grooves can increase the friction of the tires with the road. The smaller the friction, the greater is the risk of your wheels slipping.

Tires with a V pattern design are usually suitable for cars that often pass through slippery roads with high rainfall. The V-design pattern on the tires has a high frictional force that can reduce the risk of slipping when it rains or on slippery roads.

Meanwhile, if you often take bumpy road terrain, then the round tread pattern is the right choice. After replacing the car tires with new ones, don't forget to do a regular check in the next few months. You need to make sure that the car tires still have the grip to avoid the risk of slipping while the car is being driven.

5. Pay attention to the thickness of the car tires

Paying attention to the thickness of car tires is the next tip for buying new tires. One of the signs of a quality tire is its thickness. Aim for at least 50 thickness because it indicates the well balance of the vehicle which increases the performance of the car. In contrast, car tires without a good profile (thickness) can have an impact on car performance and driver safety.

Certainly, car tires with good thickness are sold at a higher price. However, if you buy low-quality and cheap car tires, you run the risk of having to change tires frequently, thus the costs incurred become even more expensive.

6. Pay attention to the year of manufacture

Just as food with a manufacture code and expiration date, so do car tires. If the car tires used have reached their expiration date, then you should immediately replace them with new car tires.

To find out the year the tire was manufactured, you can check the tire code which consists of four digit numbers, such as code 2619. The code means 26 which indicates the time the tire was made in the 26th week and 19 which indicates the year the tire was manufactured, namely 2019.

Buy car tires that are still new for their good rubber quality. Also pay attention to where the tires are stored as your consideration before buying tires. Tires that are stored in damp areas or exposed to direct sunlight will affect the quality of the rubber tires.

The most important thing when buying new car tires is to comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. This is because automotive manufacturers have taken into account aspects of safety, tire performance, and others to give a safer and more comfortable driving experience. Lastly, do consider choosing quality car tire brands, such as Achilles, Bridgestone, Michelin, Pirelli, Dunlop, and others.
