When selecting a car, there are several factors to consider, including the car's appearance, driving features, carrying capacity, and engine performance. Many people are unfamiliar with car engines, focusing primarily on the power capacity. This power capacity affects both torque and horsepower. Are you familiar with these terms? Find detailed information in our article.

Torque and horsepower are both related to the power output of a vehicle's engine. At first glance, these two may seem similar, leading to the assumption that higher values for both result in better vehicle performance. While this assumption is partially correct, it does not hold true in all situations. For instance, during long-distance trips like returning home for Eid al-Adha, a car with higher torque can often outperform a car with higher horsepower. Why is this the case? What distinguishes torque from horsepower? Let’s read and review this article ‘til the end for a more complete explanation!

Definition of Torque

Torque refers to the force needed to rotate an object in motion and serves as a measurement unit for an engine's thrust capacity. In a vehicle engine, combustion generates a force that pushes the piston, subsequently driving the crankshaft over a certain distance on revolutions per minute (rpm). The piston and crankshaft together produce a rotational force, and changes in speed are generally influenced by the torque generated. Torque is primarily utilized to accelerate the vehicle in the initial stages of engine operation.

Definition of HorsePower

Horsepower, often abbreviated as HP, is a unit used to quantify the power of a car's engine. In car engines, power is typically measured in hp/dk (horsepower per revolution). A higher horsepower rating indicates greater power output from the engine. A car with more horsepower than torque will consistently deliver faster acceleration and higher speeds. Horsepower can be calculated by multiplying torque by rpm.

Distinguishing Torque from Horsepower

While torque and horsepower may appear similar as they are both standard units for measuring a car's energy output, they have distinct differences. Here's an explanation of the disparities between torque and horsepower:

1. Function

Horsepower functions as the power that generates speed over time and distance traveled. On the other hand, torque serves as a measure of the maximum output available from the engine at a specific moment while performing its most challenging tasks. Torque also plays a role in moving the pistons and shafts to generate power or propel the car. Racing cars require high horsepower to achieve high or top speeds, while daily-use cars benefit from high torque to handle heavy loads like passengers or cargo. Greater torque results in stronger motion power.

2. Unit

Torque and horsepower employ different units. Torque is measured in Newtons (Nm) or Kgm, while horsepower is denoted as HP or PS (Pferdestärke in German). 1 HP is equivalent to approximately 735.5 to 745.7 watts. One horsepower can generate considerable power and serve as a source of energy in a car.

3. Operation

Torque is primarily responsible for initiating motion rather than generating power. During engine combustion in the combustion chamber, when the car is at rest, torque is generated to propel the rear wheels and set the car in motion. Once the vehicle is in motion, the driver's actions influence the energy required to achieve a specific speed. Power comes into play to adjust the resulting speed.

4. Role at Standstill

Torque comes into play when the vehicle is stationary. During engine combustion, force is generated to move the previously stationary car. Horsepower becomes evident when the car accelerates or moves. The power generated and work performed increase with higher vehicle speeds. The magnitude of power is influenced by time, which determines the attained speed of the car.

Tips for Boosting Horsepower

If you're not satisfied with your car's engine power, there are several methods you can try to increase its horsepower. Here are some tips for boosting horsepower:

1. Reduce the vehicle's load

Horsepower is closely tied to acceleration, so one way to increase it is by reducing the weight of the car. Heavy loads can slow down the vehicle, while a lighter car generates more power. The indicator can be seen from the increased top speed. The easiest way is to remove the rear seat or trunk when not needed.

2. Install a free-flow muffler

Free-flow or racing exhaust systems are commonly used in racing cars. These mufflers can enhance horsepower, but they also produce a louder and more aggressive sound. By using a free-flow muffler, your car's horsepower can increase by around 10% compared to a standard exhaust system.

3. Upgrade the air filter

Replacing the stock air filter with an aftermarket one can also contribute to horsepower gains. The installation of an aftermarket air filter typically results in a horsepower increase of about 3 to 6 HP. It's a relatively simple process as you only need to remove the old filter and install the new one. Aftermarket air filters are available at prices ranging from IDR 600,000 to IDR 4,000,000.

4. Perform digital tuning

Digital tuning, such as ECU remapping, can boost engine power. This process involves modifying the car's Engine Control Unit (ECU) to optimize performance. Digital tuning is relatively straightforward as it doesn't require disassembling engine components. By connecting a laptop to the car's OBD socket and resetting the ECU, horsepower can typically increase by around 10%. ECU remapping services usually start from IDR 2,000,000.

5. Consider turbocharging

Installing a turbocharger can significantly increase power output. Many modern cars utilize small-displacement engines with added turbochargers to match the performance of larger engines. However, it's crucial for you to consult an expert before installing a turbocharger to avoid potential engine damage.

6. Upgrade spark plugs and fuel

Using iridium spark plugs can enhance combustion efficiency, while pairing them with high-octane fuel can further optimize performance. This combination can increase the horsepower generated by the engine.

7. Perform a car tune-up

A comprehensive tune-up aims to restore the car's performance to its original state. After a tune-up, the vehicle often feels more responsive, and horsepower tends to increase. This is achieved by cleaning and replacing engine components, bringing the car's performance back to its initial condition.

In conclusion, we have provided information on the distinctions between torque and horsepower, as well as tips for increasing horsepower that you can experiment with. Torque is linked to acceleration, while horsepower relates to speed. Cars with high horsepower can accelerate swiftly from a standstill, but their speed may decrease when carrying heavy loads. Conversely, a car with substantial torque can maintain speed even when carrying a load due to the greater resultant force. The power-to-weight ratio factor also plays a role in determining performance. It's important to consider both torque and horsepower when selecting a car, as the ideal choice depends on individual preferences and requirements.
