FFThe automotive world continues to evolve along with today's technological advances. This can be felt since the emergence of electrification products that use hybrid and electric technologies. The vehicle uses alternative fuels as engine propulsion. Do you know what a hybrid car is? Learn more about the types of hybrid cars in our following article.
In general, you can differentiate electric cars and hybrid cars by their energy sources. Electric cars only use electricity as their energy source, while hybrid cars use two energy sources, namely fuel oil and electricity. The combination of energy sources is expected to save fuel, increase vehicle speed, and reduce pollution. Actually, what is meant by a hybrid car? Let’s read and review this article to the end to find out the answer!
What is a Hybrid Car?
Hybrid car is a car that uses two types of technology for its engine power source. Unlike ordinary cars that only have a petrol engine, hybrid cars have an electric battery engine in addition to the petrol engine. Hybrid cars use a gasoline engine as the main power source and an electric battery engine as a backup energy source that is adapted to the situation when driving.
Hybrid cars aim to reduce the exploration of non-renewable natural resources, namely fuel oil. The high use of cars in everyday life causes the high use of fuel. Hybrid cars are one way to solve this problem. In addition to reducing fuel consumption, the use of fuel will be more efficient because it is supported by an electric engine.

Types of Hybrid Cars
Currently, several types of hybrid cars have been launched in Indonesia. The use of hybrid cars varies depending on the type of car you are using. The following are the types of hybrid cars that are commonly used:
1. Full Hybrid
Full hybrid is a car that uses two energy sources as the prime mover of the engine, namely fuel and electric batteries. The two machines can work simultaneously or partially. Full hybrid systems are divided into several types, namely parallel hybrid, serial hybrid, and parallel-serial hybrid.
Parallel hybrids use the same system as mild hybrids. Serial hybrid uses a gasoline engine as a power plant to generate power to be distributed to the electric motor. The electric power will rotate the engine drive wheels so that the vehicle can move forward. In a serial hybrid, the petrol engine is not connected directly to the drive system so the car has smooth acceleration.
Currently, the most widely used hybrid system is Parallel-serial hybrid or what is often referred to as a power split hybrid. Parallel-serial hybrid combines a parallel hybrid work system with a serial hybrid. This system is quite complicated because all the driving wheels can be rotated individually by the engine and electric motor or by both simultaneously. Full hybrid can turn off the engine automatically when it stops for a moment (idling stop), regenerative braking system (regenerative braking), electric motor as a motion aid (electronic motor assist), and can be driven entirely by an electric motor (EV running mode) for a certain time or certain speed. Examples of full hybrid cars are the Toyota Camry and Alphard.
2. Mild Hybrid
Mild Hybrid or micro hybrid is a hybrid car that has the lightest engine. The engine power only uses fuel that is processed in the combustion chamber and does not have an electric motor. The electric battery only functions to support the movement of the machine. The mild hybrid system can help lighten the performance of a gasoline engine by providing an injection of power at the start of acceleration from a stationary car. Fuel use becomes more efficient with this system.
Apart from that, a mild hybrid has several other functions that are the same as a full hybrid. The difference between full hybrid and mild hybrid lies in the electric car mode (EV running mode). Mild hybrids don't have that mode. An example of a mild hybrid car is the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid.

3. Hybrid Plug-Ins
Plug-In Hybrid is a hybrid car that has a larger battery capacity and has its own charging system. This type of hybrid car consists of at least one electric engine or generator engine. This type of car also has at least one combustion engine as a successor and is equipped with an external charging system. To charge this type of car battery, you need tools such as using a plug-in cable to an electric socket. You can take a plug-in hybrid car for long drives because the battery is strong enough and easy to recharge. An example of a plug-in hybrid car is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
That is the information about the types of hybrid cars in Indonesia. A hybrid car is a mix between a regular car and an electric car. With two sources of energy as the driving force of the engine, hybrid cars are more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient. Hybrid cars are also suitable for those of you who like quiet because this car has very minimal vibrations and sound.
The use of hybrid cars is certainly no less popular than electric cars. There are various types of hybrid cars that you can choose according to your needs.
